okigroomerThis dive site is right across the street from Jam Marine Club. You can park on the street right near the steps on the sea wall. The steps lead right into the water where they have built up a protective barrier for wave action. Great place to fin up in higher tide. If you go out to the left you can drop down about 30 - 40 feet the otherside of the jacks. Like Kadena Steps, this area can get kind of turbid and murkey if there is a lot of wave action. You will see all kinds of coral, both hard and soft. Also a diverse collection of fish. Lots of star fish the last time we dove this one. If you go right, depending on the height of the tide you may have to walk over coral until you get into deep enough water to swim. There are sometimes schools of barracuda swimming around here. The wrasses keep busy with their cleaning stations and you'll see snappers and parrot fish taking advantage of their hospitality.

okigroomerThis dive site is one of my favorites. Easy to get in and out. Very diverse as far as fish and coral life. Lots of eels as well as sea snakes. A lot of instructors favor this site as it's easy to navigate and has a sandy bottom. The soft corals here are beautiful and the fish are friendly and not afraid of divers. The clarity can be affected by excessive rain fall and windy conditions. Look closely in cracks and crevices for small macro life including cleaner shrimps and small crabs. There are also usually a lot of nudibranchs to be found. The coral garden across the top of the reef is spectacular. The anemone fish around this area are not afraid of divers and can be aggressive. Unless you have gloves on keep your hands away from them. If you hear a snapping sound look around for the anemone. These guys swim around snapping thier jaws when divers get too close. During the winter months we were able to hear whale songs from the visiting Humpback whales in the area. Although we could not see the whales and had no idea how far away they were, we definetely heard them and it was amazing!

okigroomerBe sure and bring some extra yen for the parking lot. We can usually get out for less than 500 Yen. During the summer months they seem to be open until 7pm. There are bathrooms and pay for use showers. Also an ice cream shop and a noodle shop as well as no shortage of vending machines for drinks. Not exactly sure what time they open the parking lot. But, you could probably park outside of the parking area along the sugarcane fields. The dive area is down the steps and is fairly diverse. Lots of Nudibranchs, anemone fish, scorpion fish, leaf fish, parrot fish, lion fish, Moorish Idols as well as many others. Water clarity here is usually pretty good if the seas have been flat. This area is usually dive able during the summer months when other areas might be too choppy to enter. Winter months can bring wind shifts and choppy seas. The site is very easy to navigate and is popular with Americans as well as Okinawans. There are several local Okinawan dive shops who run shuttles full of divers. It can be crowded, but once you are in the water it's not usually too bad. A lot of the fish here expect to be fed and will come right up to divers. If you have food for them, Vienna sausages, or small shrimps, or commercial fish food they will entertain you until the food is gone.

okigroomerAnother wild goose chase to try and find a dive site that doesn't seem to exist. Need a 4X4 and a chainsaw to get to this area. Then, from what we could tell you get the added excitement of climbing down sharp limestone to the water. Will not be going back to this site.
